Online Education ~ Is It For You?
by Edward Strebeck

Many people who want to start or finish a college education
now have an exciting option in the Internet. It~s
especially great for anyone not living near a college or
university. Online education is gaining in popularity to
such an extent that large and famous educational facilities
are presenting online classes and even degree programs.

There~s almost an endless supply of classes offered online;
you can even get all your course supplies and materials
delivered to your front door. An online education may be
the perfect solution for many people that want to start
college or even return to university program. However,
before you sign up, there are several factors you should
consider.

If you don~t have the time or money to return to school
full time an online education may be just what you~re
looking for. Many people who are already gainfully
employed full time find it hard to dedicate themselves
to classes several nights a week or on weekends.

If your interest is in upgrading your existing skills, it
probably doesn~t make sense to quit your job to go back to
school. Especially if you have a family that is dependant
on you and your income -- you can~t merely abandon your
responsibilities. Besides, most individuals can~t survive
on student loans, let alone a whole family.

Another possible stumbling block in going back to school
may be that you don~t live near a college or university.
The reality for most people is that it just isn~t feasible
for them to relocate, as it would entail quitting their
jobs and uprooting their families. With educational
opportunities online, they suddenly have a realistic option
for getting a degree.

So far an online education sounds like the perfect
solution to your troubles. However, there are some
things you should consider before you sign up for any
online classes. How much time do you have to devote
to your course work? Many people don~t realize the
amount of work that must go into online courses and
the self-discipline required.

When you start an online class most will give you an
idea of how much time you can expect to spend each
week on the course work. You should ensure you can
put aside at least that much time per week, but some
people may need more time so don~t underestimate.
You should also seriously ask yourself if you are
disciplined enough to do the required course work, and
this could mean several hours a day.

If you are unsure that you can complete the course work
in a reasonable amount of time just start with one
course rather than signing up for an entire degree.
Many online classes also offer mentors who can assist
you if you are having problems or if you have any
questions.
