Training as a NASCAR Tech
by Hank Lishman

Automotive technology is none better than inside NASCAR.
The racecar circuit has the most specialized and leading-
edge technologists inside NASCAR using some of the best
technology to make these cars run at high-performance. Work
on these racing legends is only allowed by the best skilled
and qualified techs. As result, the National Association
for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) teamed up with Universal
Technical Institute, Inc. (UTI), a leading automotive
technical school. UTI dedicated a training facility called
NASCAR Technical Institute (NTI) with solely NASCAR
technology.
NASCAR Tech in Mooresville, North Carolina, is home to
146,000 square feet on 19 acres of training for NASCAR
technicians. Located in the heart of the nation~s racing
enthusiasm, the training center prepares 1900 students each
year for this career. While completing a 57-week long
course, students study and get hands-on exciting experience
under the supervision of NASCAR Winston Cup Series Crew
Chiefs. Training and courses offered by over 130 staff
members include transmissions, high-performance engines, and
body fabrication. Emphasis on learning teamwork, along with
NASCAR history and rules are some important curriculums
emphasized to these automotive technology students.
Initial instruction takes place in the facilities~ 49,000
square feet of 45 classrooms during the first 39 weeks.
Once this traditional classroom setting and first-hand
training is completed, students move on to Internship. The
internship lasts about 18 weeks and includes a placement
with real NASCAR teams. An alternative internship involves
placement with automotive corporation sponsors such as BMW
of North America and Jaguar Cars of North America. These
Custom Training classes allow automotive technician
studentsto learn hands-on the necessary training for
specific manufacturers.
The marketplace of NASCAR automotive technicians is
experiencing a shortage. For every currently aging and
retiring auto tech in the field, only two or three new
technicians are poised to enter this workforce. Automotive
companies are highly aware of this gap and are seeking well-
trained automotive technicians.
Diversity is one area that NASCAR Technical Institute is
working to promote more technicians into this field. This
means more diversity programs and scholarships are offered.
For instance, ~Dodge Motorsports Scholarship Program~ offers
full scholarships for 10 new students each year.
Additionally, ~UPS Racing Technical Edge Scholarship~ offers
many qualified minority students funding. NTI is accredited
by Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of
Technology (ACCSCT). Also, the U.S. Department of Education
recognizes NTI for student loans and other types of
financial aid.

this school and how to apply are provided at its website.
