COMPUTER ANIMATION ~ GROWING TECHNOLOGY
by Grant Sullivan

When it comes to computer animation, three distinct
disciplines apply modeling, rendering, and motion control.
Prior to the mid-1980s, computer graphics focused
primarily on rendering but as the years have passed, the
world of animation has branched out to a number of areas
outside of film and television. Most people relate
computer animation to films such as The Mask, Alien, and
The Polar Express.

A totally new field that has hit our radars in more recent
years is that of forensic computer animation. The main
instigation for the development of this technology was the
1985 crash of flight Delta 191.

The aircraft was heading to land at Dallas/ Forth Worth
airport when it got stuck in an almighty current. The
plane crashed, killing all 137 on board and it was only a
mile from its destination.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National
Weather Service found themselves in a whole heap of
trouble as a result of that crash. They were being sued
for more than $150 million for wrongful death and damage
to homes. They needed to understand why the crash happened
and put a map to it. This is where computer animation
stepped in.

A 45 minute computer animation was used in court to help
the jury to visualize the exact flight of the plane and
the accident. It was presented as evidence and forensic
computer animation has existed since this day. If you are
a computer and forensic science whiz, computer animation
could be a great job for you.
