Satellite Communications
by Simon Greebs

A couple of generations ago, long distance communication
was limited to interpersonal letter exchanges and the
occasional telephone call that might take hours to connect
overseas. Nowadays, though, that's all changed. In addition
to cell phones, radio, and telecommunications, we enjoy
the benefits of satellite communications that help to
transmit a bevy of information to many distant locations
for all kinds of varied uses.
>From radios and other transmitters, satellites are capable
of transmitting and receiving information. The information
may then be precisely targeted to specific reception points
where it can be further distributed to individual users on
a number of devices. Changes in weather patterns, climate
fluctuations, and a number of other geological alterations
are all detectible through satellites. The military
monitors the planet and tracks vast arrays of data through
the usage of satellites orbiting the planet.
The use of devices that receive transmissions has increased
dramatically in recent years. Radios abound, for example,
as do televisions and computers. GPS units, or global
positioning systems, help travelers to know their location
and to plot a trip to where they wish to go. Satellites are
changing the way we live today. Satellite television
dishes change the way we watch television programs as well
as the content and timing of such shows. Whereas many of
the baby boomers grew up watching a television that offered
just three main stations, today's current offerings number
in the hundreds. Remote locations with isolated
populations that had never seen a television set before now
commonly watch the latest programs from any corner of the
globe.
Governments spend billions of dollars on placing,
maintaining, and upgrading satellite systems in space.
These expensive programs often become the focus of
contention in political debates or government spending
proposals. The average consumer may not know much about
satellites or care to learn, but the fact is that most of
us will experience changes in the way we live and do
business because of the use of satellite technology.
Try using the keywords "satellite" or "communications" when
surfing the web to learn more about satellites and their
technology. Think about getting in touch with your local
government representative and find out their thoughts on
satellite technology and how much they intend to support
its continued use and development. Find out all you can
so that your opinion can be counted with regards to the
ongoing use and development of this exciting and powerful
technology.
